alfresco-logoIn February, Alfresco released version 5.1 of its enterprise software. While generally an X.1 version is a minor release, in this case there are significant enhancements both for business users and for IT. Our webinar, led by Kristen Harris, Director of Strategic Consulting at Zia Consulting, and Bindu Wavell, our Chief Architect, walked attendees through our 5 favorite features that we believe make it worth considering an upgrade to 5.1.

Below is a list of the features we covered in the webinar along with a brief description. To learn more and watch a demonstration of the features, view the slides on our Slideshare page here.

Once you’ve seen the features, we think you’ll agree that an upgrade might be compelling. As a next step, our Zia Vitality Review can look at the current state of your ECM system to create a roadmap for fixes and enhancements as well as upgrade recommendations. Or simply start with a personalized whiteboard session or demo for your company covering Alfresco 5.1 including records management and Alfresco Activiti BPM.

For Business Users
Feature #1: Default Landing Page

  • You can now log into the same page everytimes so there is a consistent place for people to start. Power users or administrators can dive deep into the repository while casual users can begin where they most often work.

Feature #2: Become Owner of a Document

  • If user has correct permissions, they can become the owner more simply than before and without needing the administrator’s assistance.

For Alfresco Analysts and Developers
Feature #3: Smart Folders

  • Optimize the way people see files in the system without a physical folder taxonomy that matches that. This is query based and gives us the ability to see things differently than how the physical files are seen.

Feature #4: Content Modeling UI

  • New content model manager allows administrators to create and review with a point and click interface which reduces manual XML editing.

For Architects
Feature #5: Solr Replication and Sharding

  • Split a single Solr index into multiple parts and each part can be replicated multiple times and split across multiple machines. This allows you to split or scale your index volume providing high availability to help increase performance/throughput with distributed operations.
